When the .NET generic top-level domain name extension was first established in 1985, along with the first domains on the Internet, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure establishments. Because of the fact that there were no special rules about the usage of the top-level domain, though, dot NET domains were reserved and used for diverse purposes and by a great number of people. This domain extension is a perfect substitution for dot COM, notably if the necessary domain with the latter TLD is not free for registration.
